Music

Music is a vital and vibrant aspect of Cathedral life. Serving God through active praise, adoration and meditative music, the liturgy is enhanced in accordance with the Church. Musicians and singers support congregational singing through chant, solemn vespers, traditional music, African music and contemporary styles of liturgical praise.

This is a key role in Cathedral life, ensuring high standards of liturgical music are planned and prepared according to liturgical priorities. The post is currently vacant.

Ronald Leith has been organist of St Mary’s Cathedral since 1973. Born in Aberdeen, he studied organ at the Royal College of Music in London and has broadcast on Radio 3 as well as giving recitals in the UK and abroad. He has a particular affection for the Cathedral’s historic James Connacher organ, built in 1887. In 2013 he received the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice medal for more than forty years of distinguished service.

John Horton has responsibility for promoting church music in the Catholic primary schools of the Diocese and has a degree in music and theology from the University of Liverpool.

The Cathedral Choir comprises soprano, alto, tenor and bass voices and sings at the 11.00am Sunday Mass. Rehearsals are held before Mass and on Thursday evenings.

This group of singers and instrumentalists serves the Sunday evening Mass and performs a wide range of musical styles. Rehearsals take place on Thursday evenings and on Sunday afternoons.

The Aberdeen African Choir was formed in January 2006 and has built a reputation for vibrant music reflecting African heritage. The choir brings African styles of worship into the celebration of the Eucharist to inspire and enrich parishioners and the wider community.

The choir also supports charitable fundraising and evangelisation through concerts and events. Practices are on Wednesdays and Saturdays, 6.00–8.00pm, in the Cathedral Upper Hall. New members are welcome and previous singing experience is not required. The African Choir is a registered charity, No. SC050828.

Musica Caeli forms part of the Cathedral’s varied musical life.

The Spanish Choir contributes to the Cathedral’s multilingual worship.

The Aberdeen Diocesan Choir serves the Roman Catholic Diocese of Aberdeen by providing high-quality liturgical music from a wide repertoire of sacred choral music. Its enthusiasm and commitment, together with support from clergy and parishioners, make the choir a continuing part of diocesan life.
